So my grandma came over to visit. Her, my dad, and I were out in the garage, where my car was parked. The following conversation(s) went down.

Kinja'd!!!

Her: Where’s that trim piece *Points to my door*

Me: It broke off

Her: Why haven’t you replaced it?

Me: It’s $170

Her: Oh. Can’t you buy aftermarket for cheaper?

My dad: That is aftermarket, from the dealer it’s over $300.

Her: Oh!

Then I decided to check my coolant while we were out there just in case.

Her: Now what are you doing?

My dad: Checking the coolant.

Me: The cooling systems on these cars aren’t great. Mine’s fine but it never hurts to check, just in case.

Her: Oh. Why didn’t you just buy a Camaro? *Laughs*

She then went on to talk about how the transmission in her Ram is going out along with a whole other host of issues that make my car look like a Camry.

You know you’re deep into the German car life when your grandma is asking why you didn’t just buy something else.

From what I’ve experienced, Mopar reliability is by far the worst of the big American three. I rarely hear of bent rods in a BMW M3.

I don’t even think her truck has 100,000 miles on it either. ‘02 with the 4.7.

Agreed. I know there are die hard Chrysler/dodge/jeep fans out there but they always seem to be making excuses as to why something else broke.

That’s about what I’ve heard also, engine failure below 100k and other issues that really should not be happening.

What I’ve noticed also is that the issues are more catastrophic, spectacular failures rather than the usual electrical issues and whatnot, which also respectively occur but at different times.

My dad and I keep trying to talk her out of spending more money on it and just buy a damn Cruze or something but she won’t get rid of it. I think it being my grandpa’s truck has something to do with that.

Lemme guess; “Oh it’s reliable, those are just wear items.”

That’s what I hear every single time, haha.

Nah, it’s actually because she likes the size and 4WD. She’s sold into the idea that bigger=better.

Not like she could buy a used GMT900 Silverado for the price of a loaded Corolla or anything. Nope.

The ones that came on the car when I bought it that I'm really tired of hearing about how bad they are that I don't have the money to replace.

Try to take pictures from another angle if you don’t want to hear about them

I have seen a transfer case come through the floor and lodge part of itself in the roof in a Dodge though!

I’m surprised, think she’s going to be paying for a transmission replacement?

I’m hoping when it goes out that’s the final straw, but I slightly doubting it.

4.7 Powertech, which sounds like it has some serious ticks going on inside.

That’ll go boom pretty soon, that way you can get her into a Colorado or something sooner!

I told my grandmother I was looking at a BMW like hers and she was like “yessssss. Do it. Please. Beat car ever”. Or something like that. My grandpa tried to bring up all the money he’s spent on it but grandma kept saying to do it.

That has to be the ticket. As I get older I’m meeting many people who are just hanging on to a vehicle beyond reason because it was left by a deceased loved one. The guy who trained me years ago: his wife won’t sell her ‘01 Dakota, as it was her dad’s. That thing has a blown engine has been sitting in his lawn for seven years.

Now hey, if your family member happened to own a vintage Ford Falcon or maybe an NSX...

Well she had his Lincoln MkVIII LSC until my uncle wrecked it and that was much more her style. Now she's stuck with the dying Dodge that her tiny self has no reason to be driving.

Well this is oppo... don’t we have a large portion of users here supporting irrational attachment to unreliable vehicles? :)

I actually like the headlights. They could be a lot worse.
